Gerald McHenry left 216 Little River #33 on December 31, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife Wanda in October 2016, his loving mother Mildred of Barberton, OH; his daughter Victoria and grandson Robert of Dothan, Alabama.
He is survived by daughter Reba Clark of Ashdown, Arkansas, her children Bobby, Michelle and Nicholas Clark; his daughter Sabrina Rogers, and husband Rocky, and granddaughter Tabatha Overstreet of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his sister Carolyn and husband Ed Kohler of Stow Ohio; nephew Christopher Kohler also of Stow; his niece Kim and husband Mike Oakes; their children Lindsay Logan and Alexa of Kent, Ohio; his brother Russell "Bub" and Mary Anne Mottmiller of Clinton, Ohio; nephews Stephen P. Mottmiller of Berlin Center, Ohio and Ryan P. Mottmiller of Rives Junction, Michigan; his niece Stephanie Richardson, and husband Benjamin, and their family of Wooster, Ohio . Gerald was also a proud papa to 14 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, 2 great nieces, and 2 great nephews. Gerald was a devoted husband and father, a very proud papa and a beloved brother.
Gerald Lee McHenry started his life's journey on July 21, 1936 in Charleston, West Virginia. He was a big brother to Carolyn and Bub and started work at a very tender age. At just 17 he enlisted in the Navy and became a naval gunner on the USS Iowa BB 61. He traveled the world serving his country in the navy visiting over 14 countries and many islands. After the service he worked all around the US for Brown and Root and then for Halliburton as an iron worker, head Forman and later as a superintendent working on building and hanging the enormous smoke stacks on paper mills. In the late seventies while working and living in La Porte, Texas he met, married and committed to Wanda and her 3 girls. Wanda, also career oriented, worked as a draftsman all over Texas and Oklahoma . While searching for their next place, Gerald found 114 acres in Ashdown and when Wanda drove over from Dallas and rounded the bend, she said "oh Gerald you didn't " and he said "oh yes we did". So thirty years of clearing, logging, cleaning, building, mowing and growing to a beautiful home began that day. Gerald loved Ashdown and all of his loyal friends and neighbors who made living here the most wonderful place on earth. His last few years were extra joyful when Gerald found out that his lil brother, Bub, had been searching for his hero he had been separated from so many years ago. Reconnected with Bub, Carolin and their families brought Gerald's life's journey full circle. You are forever in our hearts . We will always love and miss you. God speed papa.
Mr. McHenry was laid to rest on Tuesday, January 10, 2016, 2:00 pm, at Ashdown Memorial Gardens.
